In this hectic world, it’s nice to be able to escape into our inner sanctum known as photography. It’s a place we can enjoy, forget the worries left behind, and find solace behind the camera. No place better exemplifies this than a visit to Southwest Colorado to head high into the mountains to find fields of wildflowers laid out in front of you to explore with both your eye and your camera. Combine the outdoor beauty with some very interesting and different post-capture in-room sessions to make you think differently while shooting.
This workshop will be the perfect trip to train your eye to find amazing subtleties in flower photography as well as learning abstract techniques to take flower photography to the next level.
With all five life zones, Colorado has more types of wildflowers than any other state. This trip is based out of Lake City and Crested Butte and features several of the top wildflower spots in the country. Look at any photos from the San Juan Mountains and American Basin of Southwest Colorado and you will see why it’s the best place in the country for wildflower photography.
Learn a variety of new techniques to take your photography to the next level. Have you ever seen images where flowers right in front are in focus and incredible mountains in the background are also in focus and wondered how they were done? You will learn to use hyperfocal distance to make this possible. Explore the use of mylar and water glass to create wildflower abstracts you never before thought possible. Learn things with equipment attachments that will also take your photography to a new level. The things you will see through your viewfinder will amaze you.
You will use your photographic eye to look at things in a completely different way than you have before and you can take these new techniques to other photographic subjects.
Find out about new close-up photography techniques that will allow you to explore the intricate beauty found deep within an individual flower. Besides going deep within an individual flower, enjoy fields of flowers with great mountain backdrops, flowers and waterfalls, and flowers and a stream.
The beauty that will unfold in front of your eyes will guarantee a great learning experience.
Rocky and winding four-wheel drive roads will be encountered on this trip as well as high elevations of up to 12,000 feet.
Macro photography in these areas will make the time fly by. What seems like just a short time at a given stop, actually turns out to be several hours. While it might take a minute or so to set up that perfect shot, all of the work is well worth it when you look at your images and notice things you didn’t see through the viewfinder.
In the room we will explore new techniques in post procoessing to create artistic beauty of your flower photography. You won’t believe how simple it is to turn an ordinary flower photo into an impressionistic body of work. Some techniques may create images you will never try again but knowing the capabilities and learning new things will provide a sense of adventure.
We’ll also have a session where we will work with a group of flowers to work in controlled settings for some extreme macro work, looking at the intricacies and anatomy of a flower, which is exactly where most of the beauty is found.
