Get ready for your once in a lifetime trip. It’s summer in the Falklands and the penguins are nesting – thousands and thousands of them. Just outside the door of your accommodations. No matter which island and penguin colony we visit, you’re sure to find a lot of activity as parents feed young and parents come in out of the water. It won’t take long to realize you made a good choice to venture off the tip of South America to see and photograph a wide variety of penguins and other varieties of birds.
Find yourself sitting amongst a group of penguins just feet in front of you on this one of a kind Falkland Islands photo workshop. Sit still long enough and a curious penguin will walk right up and almost climb onto your lap as these birds have no fear of humans. Sit in the grasses and an albatross will appear just over your shoulder to take flight.
The Falklands are home to one of the richest concentrations of wildlife left in the world and include four different species of penguins – Rockhopper, Magellanic, King, and Gentoo. On one island sightings of Macaroni penguins might also be found to increase the number to five.
The trip has been timed to be at the peak of nesting season so there will be lots of action in the colonies with adults and young at various stages from very small to learning to fly (cormorants) or swim (penguins).
The unspoiled beauty of the Falklands is matched only by wonderfully long days to offer more than enough shooting opportunities at the best locations among the islands. These spots have been chosen based on previous trips here.
While penguins are the stars of this trip, a large colony of black-browed albatross as well as plenty of other bird species such as striated caracara, skua, cormorants, oystercatchers, geese, Falklands flightless steamer ducks, black-crowned night herons, and dolphin gulls plus more can also be photographed.
This trip is set up to visit the top spots in the islands, thus the gap between trips because the area is becoming so popular. After five trips to this wonderful place, I have picked the most photographic and enjoyable places to visit.
The workshop starts upon arrival at Mount Pleasant, Falkland Islands, where we will transfer and spend our first night in Stanley, heading to our first island the next morning. Once in the Falklands, flights between the islands are included in the price as well as all meals. Participants are responsible for any overweight costs incurred for the in-island flights. Single supplement is only available on several islands so there will be places where a shared room is required but it’s worth it.
Island destinations / schedule include:
Carcass Island – 3 nights with a day excursion to West Point Island (albatross)
Saunders Island, The Neck – 3 nights
Sea Lion Island – 3 nights
Bleaker Isaland – 2 nights
Stanley – 2 nights with a day excursion to Volunteer Point for king penguins
The way the flights work, one night in Chile on either end of the workshop is required. The price includes hotel and meals in Santiago on both ends of the trip. Schedule your flights to arrive in Santiago on Friday and then to Mount Pleasant on Saturday. Two weeks later your flight will need to go from Mount Pleasant to Santiago on Saturday and then to your home airport any time on Sunday.
