Now a very popular photographic subject, the Milky Way and star trails take center stage in this trip that couldn’t be more well suited due to the dramatic rock formations as foreground subjects.
A new moon will offer the chance to do star trail shots after the sun sets at a variety of locations. Research and study shows the weather to be optimal for clear nights of night photography for this time of year.
You will learn how to do long exposures combined with special lighting to capture images of the formations that add a new dimension to most photographs from the locations visited. We will also work with a technique called stacking where you will learn different ways to stack a bunch of images together into one image for a beautiful star trails image or even one with a comet effect. In another program you will be able to stack multiple images into an incredible Milky Way shot that will amaze you.
You will re-learn how to use ISO, white balance, aperture and shutter speeds to achieve optimal results.
Expand your typical photo shooting hours as you learn what you can do between that time of sunset and total darkness known as civil twilight. Other special techniques taught during this trip include photo stitching and HDR.
Typically a trip to the Moab area and Arches NP includes excursions for sunrise and sunset shooting. This trip we will be able to hold with this because of the sunset and sunrise times found at this time of year.
Because sunset is fairly early at this time of year, we’re able to get several formations in a night and have enough sleep to be able to get up in the morning for the great sunrise shots found throughout this scenic location.
We will bypass one or two morning shoots to have photo critiques and in-room instruction on the different programs used to bring out the Milky Way and to create star trails.
